THE WORK Of IHE-UK
Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE)
IHE is a world-wide initiative that enables Healthcare IT system users and suppliers to work together to enable interoperability of IT systems. It does this through:
careful definition of specific healthcare tasks (use cases)
identification of the information and processes required to support those tasks
specification of the necessary information exchange using existing standards and the processing to be performed
annual testing of supplier systems for conformance with the specifications.
It runs annual week long test sessions. Suppliers demonstrate that their software can interoperate successfully with the software of three other suppliers to support specific healthcare tasks. This is evidence based interoperability.
About IHE-UK
IHE-UK provides information about IHE specifications and guidance on their use in the UK. It writes extensions to the internationally used specifications to enable appropriate use in the UK if required.
About IHEand EHRs
Optimal patient care requires that care providers and patients be able to create, manage and access comprehensive electronic health records (EHRs) efficiently and securely. Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) accelerates the adoption of EHRs by improving the exchange of information among healthcare systems. Its goal is to improve the quality, efficiency and safety of clinical care by making relevant health information conveniently accessible to patients and authorised care providers.

The IHE-UK Steering Committee meets once a quarter to decide on resource allocation, finance, promotional and membership matters and well as to provide technical support for the domain committees.:The group has two co-chairs and a numberof technical officers. for more information contact:

The IHE-UK Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (MIRO) committee of the BIR provides a key forum for users and suppliers to talk together, plan and oversee, UK Integration profile deployments and helps promote the use of IHE specifications in support of smooth workflow in Medical Imaging. This in turn helps UK Healthcare institutions become more productive and efficient in the present challenging financial climate. It organises IHE interoperability demonstrations at conferences and provides educational seminars. It recently responded to the RCR paper “National Strategy for Radiology Image and Report Sharing” which recommended that the UK should move rapidly towards adoption of the XDS profiles. Current MIRO work includes investigating schemes for sharing DICOM images through the use of proxy systems.
The IHE ITI domain covers a range of profiles associated with sharing information within and across healthcare organisations. The most well known of these profiles is Cross Enterprise Document Sharing (XDS) supporting the registration and sharing of documents within and between healthcare organisations. The XDS profile provides a generic solution which supports the sharing of any type of health care information. The profile is also used as the basis for other IHE profiles, such as XDS-I to share images, which provide specialised support for the sharing of particular types of health care documents between departments and across facilities.
